Lakshmana did not sleep for 14 years when in Aranyavaasa:

As soon as Sri Lakshmana Deva was born he started to cry very loudly, until he was kept aside the Bhagavan Sri Rama Chandra. This is just similar to the Sri Aadi Sheshe Naaga deva being always with the Bhagavan Srimann Narayana. That was the bhakthi of Sri Lakshmana Deva towards Bhavagan Sri Rama Chandra, just like the bhakthi of Sri Aadi Sheshe Naaga Deva towards Bhagavan Srimann Narayana (we should know that Sri Lakshmana Deva is the amsha / reincarnation of Sri Aadi Shesha Naga Deva. Sri Lakshmana Deva always wanted to be with his brother, Bhagavan Sri Rama Chandra).
Later when Bhagavan Sri Rama Chandra along wife his wife Maata Smt. Sita Devi decided that they will go into Aranyavaasa, Sri Lakshmana Deva was not able to tolerate this and requested to fight with his own father Dasharatha and his own brother Bharatha to Bhagavan Sri Rama Chandra and win the crown of Ayodhya. But who would stop the Bhavagan. Later even Sri Lakshmana Deva also decided to join the Bhagavan along with Maata Smt. Sita Devi. Such was the Bhakthi of Sri Lakshmana Deva toward the Bhagavan.
In the first day of Aranyavaasa, when Sri Lakshmana Deva was guarding his brother and sister-in-law, the Goddess of sleep, Nidra Devi came to him. But Sri Lakshmana Deva requested the Nidra Devi not to come near to him for next 14 years. But Nidra Devi informed Sri Lakshmana Deva that it is her duty to come into every living being in the night. But Sri Lakshmana Deva was adamant and again requested the Nidra Devi not to come near him. Later Nidra Devi became very surprised and told Sri Lakshmana Deva that She can go away from him, but His sleep has to be taken by some one else. Than Sri Lakshmana Deva informed Nidra Devi to go to his wife Smt. Urmila Devi.
Nidra Devi went to Smt. Urmila Devi and told all the story of the Sri Lakshmana Deva. Smt. Urmila Devi was very much happy to hear about her husband and immediately accepted the Nidra (sleep) for next 14 years, such was the Bhakthi of the Bharatiya Nari. (In TV serials we have seen Smt. Urmila Devi been awaken like any other human being, but this is not true. She sleeps for next 14 years, all day and night without getting awakened and this is been supported by all other family members).
This boon become the curse for the Meghanath (son of Lanka Dhisha Raavana), since Meghanath (Indrajeeta) had got the aashirvaada from the Devatas that only a person who doesn't sleep for many-many years would the person who will be able to kill Meghanath.
Than later when Sri Lakshmana Deva along with his brother Bhagavan Sri Rama Chandra and Vaanara Sena after reaching Lanka kill Meghanatha.

PS: For Bhagavan only pure Bhakthi is required and nothing else. Bhagavan never asks for any riches, food, gold, diamond, jewels, etc.
Here it is not only the Bhakthi of Sri Lakshmana Deva is shown, but also the Bhakthi of Smt. Urmila Devi is also important. Only with the help and support of the wife can a husband would be able to fight anything in his life. In Bharatiya Samskruti, there is a saying that "behind every victory of a man there is woman". Especially it is always either wife or the mother or both are important.
